About StudioNine Video

A tabletop studio that films small products for a living

StudioNine Video produces product videos for small brands and independent makers. The guides here describe the table setups we use daily, written so they can be rebuilt in a kitchen or a spare room.

How the studio works

Every product starts on the same table

Our studio has one filming table that has been in the same corner for years. Everything else — lights, surfaces, backdrops — moves around it. That fixed point is the reason a range of products filmed months apart still looks like one set of videos.

The guides on this site are the documentation we give to new team members, published in full because the same problems appear in every small business that films its own products.

Studio principles

Three habits that keep product shoots efficient

These are the habits that make a twenty-minute product shoot possible.

Set up once, film many

One lighting setup serves the whole product, and often the whole range. Moving lights mid-shoot is the main cause of inconsistent footage.

Control the room, not just the product

What reflects in a glossy surface is the room. Shaping the space around the table is part of the lighting job.

Record everything

Light positions, camera height, surface and settings are photographed and written down for every setup worth repeating.

Method

How we approach a product shoot

  1. Understand what must be legible

Before filming, we agree what the viewer must be able to see: the shape, the label, the texture or the contents. That decides the angles.

  2. Choose the surface against the product

Surfaces are chosen per product so the object stays readable and the reflections are controlled.

  3. Build the light from one source

We start with a single source and add only what the shot needs, which keeps the footage clean and the setup repeatable.

  4. Film the range in one block

Products from the same range are filmed in a single session with identical positions, so the finished videos match.

Editorial desk

The people behind the table

Guides are written by the studio team and reviewed by the editors who finish the videos. Roles are credited rather than names.

Studio lead

Set and lighting guides

Owns the table setup, the surface library and the recorded light positions.

Product videographer

Angle and framing guides

Films the products and documents which angles carry which kind of information.

Editor

Consistency and finishing

Checks that footage from different products cuts together and that colours match the physical objects.
